When Should Kids Start Seeing The Dentist?

The American Association of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that kids start seeing the dentist when their first tooth comes out or when they turn one year old, whichever comes first. And at Opal Dental Studio, that’s our recommendation, too!

Bringing your child to the dentist from a very young age has lots of benefits for parents. You can learn more about their oral development, get tips on how to care for your child’s teeth, and get answers to any questions you may have about teething, baby tooth loss, and oral development.

Checkups, cleanings, and X-rays

Six-month visits are the cornerstone of a healthy mouth for children of all ages. During your little one’s visit, the team at Opal Dental Studio will clean their teeth. Then, Dr. Gonzales will examine your child’s smile to look for signs of cavities, gum disease, and oral development issues.

We also recommend yearly X-rays for most kids. X-rays allow Dr. Gonzales to identify potential oral health issues that may be hidden during routine exams. We use the latest digital X-ray technology to reduce X-ray exposure for your kids and keep them comfortable during the process.

Fluoride treatments wording here - fluoride free office for the most part

With fluoride treatments nano hydroxyapatite - can explain what that is, parents can fight back against cavities. In this treatment, Dr. Gonzales will apply a thin layer of fluoride-rich liquid to your little one’s teeth, leave it in place for a few minutes, then rinse it away. The fluoride helps attract minerals to their teeth, strengthening them and reducing their risk of tooth decay (cavities).

Dental sealants

For parents who wish to avoid fluoride or just want long-lasting protection against cavities, dental sealants are a great option. In this treatment, Dr. Gonzales will apply transparent dental resin to your child’s rear teeth, then harden it with a UV light.

This creates a long-lasting barrier that protects your child’s teeth from food particles, bacteria, and acid. In turn, this helps prevent cavities. Dental sealants can often last up to 5-10 years. They're a particularly great option for protecting the rear teeth, which are more likely to develop cavities due to their deep pits and grooves.

Tooth-colored fillings

Cavities happen, even if you’re doing your best to keep your little one’s smile healthy. As a biological dentist, Dr. Gonzales exclusively offers tooth-colored composite fillings. Composite fillings help keep your child’s smile bright, and they are free of mercury and other metals like silver. If your little one’s tooth hurts and you think they may have a cavity, we’re here to help!
