What Are Veneers?

Veneers are thin, yet mighty shells of porcelain that are custom-made to fit over the front of your teeth. Designed to seamlessly fill in gaps, cover years of stains, perfect misshapen teeth, and more, veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures because of their versatility. Veneers also look, feel, and function just like natural teeth, making them an optimal solution in terms of longevity, convenience, and comfort.

Benefits of Veneers

When it comes to cosmetic procedures, veneers are a great long-term investment for enhancing your smile and require no special care beyond daily brushing and flossing. Durable, non-invasive, and natural-looking, veneers offer an array of benefits that can significantly improve the appearance of your teeth and encourage a greater sense of confidence.

The Veneer Treatment Process

Transforming your smile with veneers typically takes just two appointments! During your first appointment, Dr. Umair or Dr. Irum will prepare your teeth for the veneer treatment by cleaning and numbing your mouth. Next, a very thin layer of enamel will be removed from each tooth receiving treatment to secure a snug, natural-looking fit for the veneers. After the trimming process, you’ll have a set of dental impressions and photos taken of your teeth. These photos and impressions will be sent to a lab to create veneers designed just for your smile. While your beautifully crafted, permanent veneers are being made, you’ll go home with a set of temporary resin veneers to keep your newly-prepared smile protected.

When your customized set of veneers arrives at our office, it’s time for your permanent smile transformation! To ensure your veneers look and feel completely natural, Dr. Umair or Dr. Irum will check to see that they fit perfectly, and bond them permanently to your teeth with a lasting dental cement. After your veneers have been placed, you’ll step out of our office with a bright and beautiful new smile!

What Will Veneers Repair?

It’s important to note that veneers will not repair your teeth but can cover up imperfections and repair the appearance of your smile. Veneers are most commonly used to cover up chips, cracks, discoloration, crooked teeth, to fill in gaps, or to achieve perfectly even teeth in size, shape, and color.

However, these issues will still exist underneath the veneers. If you have severely crooked teeth, you may need to undergo orthodontic treatment before you can have veneers placed. Veneers can also not repair oral health problems such as tooth decay and gum disease.

Being in good oral health is a prerequisite for veneers and detection of any of these issues may disqualify you as a candidate. You will need to have these problems treated before veneers can be used to improve the appearance of your teeth.
Are you interested in dental veneers? Get the perfect smile you’ve always dreamed of. The process starts with a consultation to approve you as a good candidate and rule out any oral health problems. To get started, contact us at Opal Dental Group and schedule a consultation with Dr. Umair Waheed today.

Are Veneers Permanent?

Veneers themselves are not permanent but the enameloplasty that is performed on the teeth receiving the veneers is. Veneers are porcelain shells that last for up to 15 years. However, they are prone to wear and tear and can chip, crack, or become damaged. They will need to be continually replaced when they have outlived their lifespan or have become prematurely damaged.

The preparation procedure for the veneers, known as enameloplasty, involves shaving .5 mm of enamel off of the tooth. This is done because this is the thickness of the veneer. By removing a small amount of enamel, the veneer will blend in with the teeth and not bulge outward too much. This also helps the bonding process and makes the veneer adhere to the tooth more easily.

We want you to get the most out of your veneers which is why we’ll tell you what you can do to extend their lifespan. Take care of them like you would your natural teeth. Wear a mouthguard if you grind or clench your teeth because this can cause severe damage to artificial or real teeth.

Don’t chew on very hard or sticky foods with your veneers. Veneers are typically placed on the anterior teeth so chew with your anterior teeth (the rear molars). While veneers are typically low maintenance and don’t require any special care, you need to practice good oral hygiene by regularly brushing with fluoride toothpaste and flossing.

Only use a soft-bristle toothbrush so you don’t cause too much abrasion to your veneers. It’s important to visit the dentist every 6 months for cleanings and checkups. This will ensure your veneers stay white and that you don’t collect a buildup of plaque along the gum line, between your teeth, or behind the veneers.

Can Veneers Stain?

Porcelain veneers are stain-resistant so they won’t stain as easily as your natural teeth. However, that doesn’t mean that discoloration will never happen, especially over time. Veneers can stain just like your natural teeth, especially if you are constantly exposing them to staining foods and drinks and smoking.

You can reduce your risk for stains by reducing your consumption of coffee, tea, wine, highly pigmented foods and drinks, and tobacco products. You can also try drinking out of a straw. Veneers cannot be whitened with whitening treatments like your natural teeth can but surface stains can be removed with regular dental cleanings.
